Morning

Who can say, “I have kept my heart clean”? — Prov 20:9 NET

The Lord looks down from heaven at the human race, to see if there is anyone who is wise and seeks God. Everyone rejects God; they are all morally corrupt. None of them does what is right, not even one!—Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

For I want to do the good, but I cannot do it. For I do not do the good I want, but I do the very evil I do not want!—We are all like one who is unclean, all our so-called righteous acts are like a menstrual rag in your sight. We all wither like a leaf; our sins carry us away like the wind.

But the scripture imprisoned everything and everyone under sin so that the promise could be given – because of the faithfulness of Jesus Christ – to those who believe.—In Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting people’s trespasses against them.

If we say we do not bear the guilt of sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous, forgiving us our sins and cleansing us from all unrighteousness.

Evening

The waves roar and crash. — Ps 93:3 NET

Above the sound of the surging water, and the mighty waves of the sea, the Lord sits enthroned in majesty.—O Lord, sovereign God! Who is strong like you, O Lord? Your faithfulness surrounds you. You rule over the proud sea. When its waves surge, you calm them.

“You should fear me!” says the Lord. “You should tremble in awe before me! I made the sand to be a boundary for the sea, a permanent barrier that it can never cross. Its waves may roll, but they can never prevail. They may roar, but they can never cross beyond that boundary.”—“When you pass through the waters, I am with you; when you pass through the streams, they will not overwhelm you.”

So he said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat, walked on the water, and came toward Jesus. Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”—When I am afraid, I trust in you.
